He stood on the porch, embraced by the moonlight and the haze of cigarette smoke.
"Sure, I could have a fancy house with all the finest things. But I'd prefer to enjoy life..."
And by "enjoy life," he meant that instead of a fancy home and fine things, he'd rather indulge in temporary delights like booze and smokes.
This was the kind of man he was, he didn't want anything that truly lasted, only momentary things.
